How to Apply


Recruitement as a PhD student primarily follows these steps:

1) Contact a principal investigator who is working in a field that matches your background knowledge and interests in research. A current list of principal investigators is available here:

2) If you and the principal investigator mutually agree on a common research project, start preparing your research and study plans, keeping in mind that the aim is to complete the doctoral degree in 4 years net time.

3) Make a funding plan with your supervisor for the duration of the doctoral thesis work (more info below).

4) Apply for a right to pursue doctoral degree in the University. More info on that is here: (Univ Helsinki) and (Aalto Univ)

There are several ways to get funding for doctoral studies:

a) Doctoral program: The are a limited number of 1-4 year Universiity of Helsinki -funded positions that are announced annually and the doctoral candidates are selected for funding through an open call. More information of the call for funded positions can be found here >> 

b) Research group: Many research groups have project funding from e.g. Academy of Finland, Tekes, ERC, foundations, etc. and can hire doctoral candidates.

c) Personal grants: You can apply for funding from several Finnish or foreign foundations:
